President's Letter

FRIENDS UNITED AND ENGAGED IN SERVICE

The Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter is comprised of seventy-two dynamic women from nine counties within the Charlotte Metro area. Since our chartering in 1993, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter has exemplified friends who serve through transformative programming and scholarship. Our programming has been award-winning for two consecutive years and received national recognition in 2024.

In April of this year, we awarded over $95,000 in scholarships to students to assist in furthering their education and cumulatively, over $300,000 in scholarships have been awarded since the chapter’s inception. Together, we have developed exemplary programs with the Arts Empowerment Project, Samaritan’s Feet, and the Charlotte Ballet Academy. The Chapter also promotes mental health awareness and has longstanding partnerships with institutions supporting youth, including Johnson C. Smith University, the Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, and the National Society of Black Engineers. Through the Link to Excellence Achievers Program and other initiatives, the Chapter continues to make a lasting impact.

I am excited and humbled to lead such a dedicated and distinguished group of women.

Thank you for your continued commitment. Together we are Friends United and Engaged in Service. I look forward to another year of collectively making a difference with you.

Yours in friendship and service,

Evette Beckett-Tuggle

  • As we bring our celebration of Women’s History Month to a close, we recognize another distinguished chapter member, Judge Karen Eady-Williams, whose dedication to justice and service inspires her community, her profession, and our chapter.

Karen has over 30 years of experience in the legal field and has served as an elected judicial official in the 26th Judicial District of North Carolina since 2009. As a Superior Court judge since 2017, she presides over high-dollar civil cases and felony criminal matters, and she recently filed for re-election to continue her service unopposed beginning January 2027. Prior to the Superior Court bench, she served eight years on the District Court bench, leading Mecklenburg County’s criminal, drug, and mental health treatment courts.

Her career began as an Assistant Public Defender, followed by service as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, focusing on major white-collar crimes and supervising the Financial Litigation Unit. She later joined Wachovia Corporation as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, managing large-dollar litigation and advising the Anti-Money Laundering Division.

Within the legal profession, Karen serves on the North Carolina Pattern Jury Instructions Committee, has been Vice President of the Mecklenburg County Bar, and has held prestigious appointments including the Federal Local Rules Committee and the Federal Merit Selection Panel.

Beyond her professional achievements, Karen demonstrates unwavering commitment to community service, serving on boards such as the Arts and Science Council, Belmont Community Development Corporation, Hornets’ Nest Girl Scouts Council, and Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont.
